Long description:
Hearts is a four-person card game based on taking tricks. It is an easy game to learn, but
difficult to master. The object is to have the lowest score possible, where points are earned
from taking tricks containing Hearts or the Queen of Spades, and points are subtracted from
taking tricks containing the Jack of Diamonds.
Each person is dealt 13 cards from a standard deck of 52. At the beginning of each hand, each
player evaluates their cards and chooses three cards to pass to another player. Cards are
passed to the left or “West” on the first round. Cards are passed to the right or “East” on the
second round. Cards are passed across or “North” on the third round. Cards are not passed on
the fourth round.
Cards are played clockwise with the player who has the 2 of Clubs leading it for the first
“trick” or four cards. Each player must play a card of the same suit as the first card lead if
they have it, or if they don’t, another card in their hand. Hearts and the Queen of Spades
cannot be played on the first trick.
How to:
Hearts is a four-person card game based on taking tricks. The object is to have the lowest
score possible.
Each person is dealt 13 cards from a deck of 52. At the beginning of a hand, each player
selects three cards to pass. Cards are passed to the left or "West" on the first round, the
right or "East" on the second, across or "North" on the third, and not passed on the fourth.
Cards are played clockwise with the player who has the 2 of Clubs leading it first. Each player
must play a card of the same suit as the first card lead, if they have one, or another suit, if
they don't. Hearts and the Queen of Spades cannot be played on the first trick.
With Aces counting as high, the person who played the highest card in the trick wins it, and
puts it aside for scoring later. The winner of the trick leads the next trick. Hearts cannot
be lead until they have been "broken" by someone playing a Heart on a trick when they do not
have cards in the lead suit.
Points are counted once all the cards have been played. Each player gets points for the cards
contained in the tricks they won. The Queen of Spades is worth 13, Hearts are worth 1 each, and
the Jack of Diamonds is worth -10. If one player took all the Hearts in the deck and the Queen
of Spades this is called "Shooting the Moon" and every other player gets 26 points.
After the cards are scored a new hand is dealt, and the game continues until one of the players
has a score of 100 or higher. At this point, the player with the lowest score wins. Tie games
continue until there is only one player with the lowest score.
